Bioinnovative Corp. has developed an utility model for a sunscreen cosmetic product from microalgae. This sunscreen cosmetic product has a vast range of UV protection, namely against both UVA and UVB rays. It is based on the microalgal pigment astaxanthin, which is well known for its' properties as a natural sunscreen.

This utility model is patent pending at the Patent Office of Republic of Bulgaria.

Bioinnovative Corp. has developed 9 utility models for nutraceuticals from microalgae. The nutraceuticals developed by Bioinnovative Corp. contain only natural ingredients with proven benefit on human health. They provide an optimal daily amount of aminoacids, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, immunostimulants etc., which is required for people with a dynamic lifestyle.

All nutraceuticals developed by Bioinnovative Corp. are based on the microalgae Spirulina and Chlorella as well as the microalgal pigment astaxanthin.

All utility models of nutraceuticals from microalgae developed by Bioinnovative Corp. are patent pending at the Patent Office of Republic of Bulgaria.

Bioinnovative Corp has developed an investment project and has authorization for the construction of a "Facility for the cultivation and processing of microalgae”.The facility will be located in an area of 2358.00 m2 (the building complex on the lot hasa total area of 1929.80 m2)in Gospodinovo,Byalamunicipality, in the region Varna. The implementation of a"primary production" - productionof primaryalgae  biomassin a formsuitablefor further processingas a product/supplement/for human consumption; is planned. The production will be self-sustained and waste-free. The production capacityby cultivationand subsequent processing will beup to 15 kg/day of dry algaein the form oftablets and capsules.Thatamountisthe nominal capacityunder optimalweather conditionsin the periodfrom April to November. The productionwill depend on manyfactorsincluding such that cannot alwaysbe controlledand managed.In the courseofoperationit ispossible to somewhat increasethe production capacityas a resultofoptimizing the applied technology.

The production process is based on monitoring  the basic parameters associated with the cultivation and processing of microalgae. Ensuring constant quality over time and compliance with all regulatory safety requirements for food production will be achieved by implementing and maintaining an Integrated Management System (IMS), including: system for quality management, according to EN ISO 9001:2008; management system for food safety, according to EN ISO 22000:2005; system for environmental management according to EN ISO 14001:2004; Health and safety management system, according to BS OHSAS 18001: 2007 ; GAP (Good Agricultural Practices ).

Bioinnovative Corp. has developed an utility model for a modullar installation for manufacturing plant extracts. The installation is designed for eco friendly production of valuable compounds from plants (e.g. antioxidants, alkaloids, essential oils, flavoids, polyphenols etc.) via different methods of extraction: supercritical CO2 extraction (with or without organic co-solvent); subcritical water extraction water extraction; organic solvent extraction; protein hydrolyzation; enfleurage extraction.

This installation can perform extractions according to the specifications of various extraction protocols for herbs, seeds, oil-bearing plants, microalgae etc.

The company "Bioinovative PUL" was created for the project "Bioinovative PUL: Office for Technology Transfer", financed by the Operational Program "Development of the Competitiveness of Bulgarian Economy 2007-2013". The company is a partnership between "Bioinovative corp." (biotechnological company) and "The Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics BAS" (research organization). The motive for the unification of the participants is to create and transfer innovative biotechnology in the field of cultivation and different applications of microalgae - producers of products with potential economic and medical importance, as well as other eco and energy-saving technologies and technologies related to health. The participants in "Bioinovative PUL" have the necessary scientific expertise and practical knowledge to implement and transfer innovations in the area of cultured microalgae - medicines, nutritional supplements, bioplastics, biodegradable packaging and many other "green" products and technologies. On 19.09.2012 a grant was signed between the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism and "Bioinovative PUL", which started the actual project implementation.

Results (summarized):

- Realized investment project to create a new Office of Technology Transfer;

- Equipped and functioning office providing a range of services related to the assessment, development, optimization and implementation of innovative technologies and products.

-Tested novel optimizations for microalgae cultivation systems (including a LED-based lighting system for photobioreactors and a DAF-based enrichment of the culture medium with carbon dioxide).

- Developed a vast product portfolio including microalgae derived nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals and bioplastics.

- Outlined a marketing strategy for microalgae based products.
